10 referral program ideas for home service businesses
Home service businesses have a big advantage: your customers have neighbors. Here are ten practical ways to turn finished jobs into new ones.

Before you start: the basics
Every idea below works better with three basics in place. A clear reward, like a $75 gift card when a referred friend books. A simple way for customers to pass you along, like a personal link they can text. And a way to track who sent who, so you can thank the right person.
You do not need all ten ideas. Pick two or three that fit your business and do them well.
1. Leave-behind cards with a QR code
Give every tech a stack of small cards to leave on the counter after the job. Put your logo, one line about the reward, and a QR code that opens your referral page.
Write something warm on it: “Thanks for having us. Know someone who needs us? Scan here and you both get $50.” A card on the fridge keeps working for months. Cards cost a few cents each, so even one new job pays for thousands of them.
2. A text after every service
The highest-return habit on this list. Within a few hours of finishing, text the customer to say thanks and include their personal referral link.
It works because it lands at the happy moment, and it lives in their phone where they can find it when a friend asks. The key is consistency. Every job, not just the ones you remember.
3. The neighbor offer
When you finish a job, the houses next door are your best prospects. They have the same age of home, the same trees dropping leaves in the same gutters, and the same hard water.
With your customer’s permission, leave a door hanger on the five houses on either side: “We just helped your neighbor at #42. Mention them and get $50 off your first visit.” Your customer gets the referral reward if a neighbor books. A yard sign during the job helps too.
4. Seasonal pushes
Most home services have busy and slow seasons. Use referral pushes to fill the slow ones, or to get ahead of the rush.
- HVAC: a spring push for AC tune-ups, a fall push for furnace checks.
- Landscaping: late winter, before people sign up for the season.
- Gutters and roofing: early fall, before the leaves and storms.
- Pest control: early spring, before the bugs show up.
- Cleaning: before the holidays, when people host guests.
Send past customers a short text: “Spring tune-up season is here. Know someone whose AC needs a check? Send them your link. This month, the reward is doubled to $100.” A time limit gives people a reason to act now.
5. Give the friend something too
A two-sided reward means the new customer also gets something, like $50 off their first visit. Now your customer is not just asking a favor. They are passing on a deal.
This makes the referral easier to send and easier to accept. The friend has a real reason to call you instead of searching online and picking the first result.
6. Partner with realtors
New homeowners need everything: inspections, cleaning, painting, HVAC service, lawn care. Real estate agents are the first people they ask.
Reach out to a few local agents and offer something useful to their clients: priority scheduling, a free first inspection, or a new-homeowner discount. Agents look good for recommending someone reliable.
Be careful with paying agents directly. Real estate has strict rules about referral fees in some situations, and so do some trades and states. Offering a benefit to the homeowner is usually the simpler route. Check the rules where you work before you pay any partner.
7. Swap referrals with other trades
Plumbers find electrical problems. Electricians spot HVAC issues. Cleaners see the gutters that need work. You already notice jobs you do not do.
Pick two or three trades you trust and agree to send each other work. Keep a short list of names on every truck. When your customer asks “do you know a good electrician?”, you have an answer, and you get the same treatment in return. Your customers will thank you for it, too.
8. Bigger rewards for plan members
If you sell maintenance plans or recurring service, those customers are your biggest fans. Give them a better reward, like double the standard amount or a free month of service.
It gives people another reason to join the plan, and it rewards the customers who already trust you most.
9. A bonus for repeat referrers
A few customers will send you friend after friend. Make it worth their while. A simple bonus works: “Send three friends who book this year and get an extra $150.”
Keep it easy to understand. One standard reward plus one bonus is plenty.
10. Thank people in a way they remember
The reward is the thank-you. The note is what they remember. A handwritten card from the owner, sent with the gift card, costs a dollar and a few minutes.
Some owners also thank top referrers publicly, like a shout-out on social media. Always ask first. Not everyone wants their name online.
Which ones should you start with?
If you only do two things, do these: text every customer after every job with their link (idea 2), and leave a QR card behind (idea 1). They cover the happy moment and the months after.
Then add one seasonal push (idea 4) before your next slow stretch. Once those are running, try a partner idea like trade swaps or realtors.
If you want the after-job texts to happen on their own, REFERX sends them after every job, tracks who sent who, and sends the gift card automatically when the referred job is won. Not sure where your business stands today? Take the free Referral Score quiz below.
